SPRING FLUTE FESTIVAL

Sunday, April 13th

The San Diego Flute Guild Spring Festival is back for 2025, bringing together flutists of all levels for an exciting day of music, learning, and community. This is California’s biggest flute day, and you don’t want to miss it.

Festival Schedule

10:00 am - 8:00 pm Various Rooms Registration + Competitions Begin
Please check-in at the SDFG registration desk in front of the exhibitor hall in Cottonwood Room 120 to receive a program book, name badge, and information about the festival.

10:15 am - 10:45 am Maple Room/118 Warm-Up Class
Join Anahita Pestonjamasp for a morning wam up to get yourself sounding and feeling great for the day! Feel free to stay for the entire class or come and go as needed!

10:45 am - 12:15 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Young Artist Competition Final Round
Come and support three finalists of the SDFG YAC 2025: William Yeh, Elvin Schlanger and Rebecca Huynh.

11:00 am - 5:30 pm Cottonwood Room/120 Exhibitor Hall
Browse and try out different flutes and flute-related accessories from our various exhibitors in the Exhibitor Hall. Come in at any time!

12:15 pm - 1:15 pm Acacia Room/140 Flute Choir Reading/Rehearsal
Bring your flutes - piccolo, flute, alto flute, bass flute - and join us for some fun sight reading of flute choir arrangements conducted by Joan Knoernschild

1:15 pm - 1:45 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Chamber Music for Flute and Guitar
Join Duo Festudgioso in a recital of works that showcase a diverse mix of early 20th-century Larin American and contemporary music for flute and guitar

1:45 pm - 2:45 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Guest Artist Masterclass
Benjamin Smolen will lead a masterclass of various flute repertoire including works of Muczynski, Prokofiev and Gaubert featuring three performers: Petunia Rizo, Taj Alliotta and Carmela Harkins.

2:45 pm - 3:45 pm Acacia Room/140 Flute Repair Workshop
Join Cynthia Kelley from Flutacious! for an essential and hands-on flute repair class designed to introduce you to critical skills needed to handle common flute emergencies. Hands-on experience available for the first 15 participants. Auditors welcome. Sign up HERE

3:00 pm - 3:30 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Sounds of Coexistence
Join Jennifer Jo as she explores the relationship between traditional East Asian flutes and contemporary Western flute music.

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Acacia Room/140 Mindfulness in Flute Practice
Join Cassie O'Hanlon and explore simple yet powerful strategies to improve focus, reduce frustration, and build deeper awareness in your playing.

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Two Presentations by Marley Eder
Join Marley Eder in a workshop on exploring various approaches on tone color on flute "Transcending Crayola - what is color?" followed by a recital on four rare and underrepresented works for flute featuring music by Amy Beach, Marilyn Bliss and more.

5:00 pm - 5:30 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Flute Choir Performance

5:30 pm - 6:00 pm Acacia Room/140 Raffle + Reception
Join us for a brief reception before the Guest Artist Recital to mingle, enjoy some light refreshments, and test your luck at winning some flute-related raffle prizes!

6:00 pm - 7:00 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Guest Artist Recital
Featuring Guest Artist, Benjamin Smolen. This recital program weaves together poetry, baroque elegance, contemporary color, and impressionist brilliance in a journey through transformation and joy. Benjamin will be joined by Antonina Styczen (flute) and Phillip Matsuura (piano). Works by: Sidney Lanier, Christopher Theofanidis, Marin Marais, Kenji Bunch and Claude Debussy.

7:00 pm - 7:30 pm Manzanita Hall/142 Awards Ceremony
